This page provides instructions for configuring your Mac OS X system to run a native version of the rhyolite-MELTS (which supersedes MELTS) or pMELTS software package. Rhyolite-MELTS is based on the original MELTS calibration with modifications that should affect only the stability of quartz and alkali-feldspar. Consequently, application of rhyolite-MELTS to more mafic systems (or any system that is quartz and alkali-feldspar absent) should yield results identical to those from the orginal MELTS calibration. In addition, a number of algorithmic modifications to rhyolite-MELTS make the program less prone to numerical failures.
AlphaMELTS:Paul Asimow and Paula Antoshechkina have created a scripted version of MELTS that runs on UNIX systems (including Mac OS X and Linux) and machines running Windows. AlphaMELTS includes the ability to model water solubility in mantle minerals and the effect of water on the mantle solidus. 'Yukikoi Melt' is a visual novel about a young man's life in the Winter Country. Miharu, a winter hater, and the girls of the Winter Club find their lives intertwined when he moves to snowy Yubane. Can their warmth melt.
Results computed using the rhyolite-MELTS/pMELTS software package should be properly cited.

Melt Town Mac Os X
- Verify that your Macintosh runs one of the following:
- Sierra (10.12)
- El Capitan (10.11)
- Yosemite (10.10+)
- Mavericks (10.9+)
- Mountain Lion (10.8+)
- If this is the first installation of MELTS, install an X11 server, which ensures that the MELTS executable will launch:
- Download XQuartz from xquartz.macosforge.org and install the application.
- For Sierra, install XQuartz 2.7.9 or later.
- For other MacOS versions, install XQuartz 2.7.7 or 2.7.8. - Log out and log back into your computer, or restart it.
- Download XQuartz from xquartz.macosforge.org and install the application.
- Download the compressed executable image of rhyolite-MELTS/pMELTS, and save it to the hard drive:
- (Sierra) Download the compressed executable image, and save it as rhyolite-Melts-Mac-OS-10.12+.zip.
- (Other MacOS versions) Download the compressed executable image, and save it as rhyolite-Melts-Mac-OS-10.8+.zip.
- Open the OS X Terminal utilities application, and navigate to the location of the file rhyolite-Melts-Mac-OS-10.12+.zip or rhyolite-Melts-Mac-OS-10.8+.zip.
- Make sure that the decompressed file is named Melts-rhyolite-public:
- If your browser does not automatically decompress zipped files, decompress the executable image: In the terminal window run the UNIX command unzip rhyolite-Melts-Mac-OS-10.12+.zip or unzip rhyolite-Melts-Mac-OS-10.8+.zip.
- If the browser automatically decompresses the zip file, the result is named Melts-rhyolite-public.
- In the terminal window, run the following UNIX command, which ensures that the executable image has the correct permissions:
- chmod 755 Melts-rhyolite-public
- Optionally, move the executable image to a convenient directory.
- Optionally, download the MELTS input file morb.melts and the pMELTS input file mm3.melts for testing purposes.
- In a terminal window, navigate to the directory where you placed the executable image, and start the program by typing:
- ./Melts-rhyolite-public
- Choose rhyolite-MELTS version 1.0.2, 1.1.0 or 1.2.0, or pMELTS mode. The interface appears on your screen. Resize as appropriate in order to see the entire interface. rhyolite-MELTS + H2O-CO2 fluid (v 1.2.x)
This version is a replacement and upgrade from rhyolite-MELTS 1.0.x. It is the rhyolite-MELTS model with water properties completely replaced with the H2O-CO2 fluid saturation model of Ghiorso and Gualda (2015). Thermodynamic properties of the fluid phase are calculated from the model of Duan and Zhang (2006). Use this version to model crystallization in bulk compositions other than those that saturate in quartz and crystallize to the two-feldspar-, quartz-, fluid-saturated ternary minimum.

rhyolite-MELTS + H2O-CO2 fluid (v 1.1.x)
Use this version ONLY to model crystallization in bulk compositions that saturate in quartz and crystallize to the two-feldspar-, quartz-, fluid-saturated ternary minimum. This version is the rhyolite-MELTS model with CO2 melt properties and mixed-fluid energetic terms from Ghiorso and Gualda (2015), utilizing H2O melt properties and H2O-anhydrous component energetic mixing terms from MELTS (which are the same as in rhyolite-MELTS v 1.0.x). Thermodynamic properties of the fluid phase are calculated from the model of Duan and Zhang (2006).

rhyolite-MELTS (original, v 1.0.x)
This version is the MELTS model (Ghiorso and Sack, 1995) with corrections to the free energies of quartz and sanidine so that the eutectic-like crystallization at the ternary minimum in the quartz-two-feldspar+fluid system is recovered. (This version replaces MELTS, which should no longer be used to calculate phase relations in magmatic systems.) Use this version to model crystallization in natural composition liquids at pressures below 2 GPa. The fluid phase is modeled as pure H2O. PhasePlot implements the rhyolite-MELTS model.

I use a four year old Powerbook G4 (667mhz/512mb) running 10.3.9. I typically have 5 firewire drives hooked in and get online via a Belkin wireless modem.
This morning on start up I got a flashing globe icon follwed by a small OS9 folder icon which flashed with a question mark, I then got a gray screen with a 'no entry' icon (circle with a diagonal line through it).
I had DiskWarrior in my CD drive and have managed a rebuild however - the Hard Drive has 'disappeared' DiskWarrior now only sees a drive called 'Untitled' The rebuild resulted in a very long shopping list of files/folders/volumes that needed repairing and 117 files being moved to a 'Rescued Items' folder. However post-rebuild I still had the same issues when restarting
I then completely erased the hard drive and reinstalled Panther 10.3 and brought it up to 10.3.9 via Software Update - Final Cut, Cleaner 6, Photoshop, Macromedia Studio mx were then installed all from the original cd's.. but not yet any of my data from my firewire backup.
All looked good until i tried to install Apple Loops for Soundtrack - the m/c hung, I forced a restart and I GOT MY ORIGINAL FLASHING OS9/QUESTION MARK ICON BACK. Diskwarrior was again swung into action and once again it did not see my Hard Drive - just a volume called 'Untitled'
DiskWarrior has just completed its rebuild and describes my melt down as follows:
DiskWarrior has successfully built a new directory named 'Untitled'. The new directory cannot be replace the oringinal the original directory due to a Mac OS services failure.
Try rebuilding again. If the problem persists, please restart DiskWarrior and then try rebuilding again.
The original directory is severely damaged and it was necessary to scavenge the directory to find file and folder data.
Some file and folder data may be missing, and some files that had been lost thrown away may have been recovered.
All errors in the directory structure such as tree depth, header node, node size, node counts, node links, indexes and more have been repaired.
96640 files had to be recovered. The files may have been lost or thrown away. You must inspect the files to determine the extent of any damage. You must also determine whether the files should be discarded.
72 iNode files had a link count that was repaired.
262 link files had a creation date that was repaired.
194 link files no longer point to an original file and therefore cannot be repaired.
230 files had a directory entry with an incorrect flag that was repaired.
224 files had a directory entry with an incorrect alias flag that was repaired.
7 files had a duplicate ID that was repaired.
332 files had an ID that was repaired.
82 files had a directory entry with an incorrect text encoding that was repaired.
107 files had a directory entry with an incorrect starting allocation value that was repaired.
58605 files had a duplicate name that was repaired.
329 files had an incorrect allocated size that was repaired.
331 files had an incorrect actual size that was repaired.
8 files had an incorrect BSD Type that was repaired.
670 files had an oversized thread that was repaired.
583 files had an incorrect key that was repaired.
